Renewing America's Purpose and Promise
The Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs at Ashland University is renewing the foundations of civic education  in America by reinvigorating the serious study of the principles of American liberty and self-government. Through history and civic education programs for high school history and government teachers, undergraduate and high school students, and through events and resources for private citizens, the Ashbrook Center is renewing America’s purpose and promise.

An Independent Academic Center at
Ashland University
While the Ashbrook Center is a part of Ashland University, the Center is  governed by its own independent board and is responsible for raising all of the funds necessary for the many programs sponsored by the Center. There is a growing movement across America to create independent academic centers at colleges and universities. The Ashbrook Center is the first and finest example of one of these centers.

Ashbrook Scholar Program
The Ashbrook Scholar Program is a rigorous and top-rated academic program for a select group of undergraduate students  majoring or minoring in Political Science or History at Ashland University. Ashbrook Scholars study with some of the finest faculty in the nation and undertake a program of courses and activities that challenge their mettle and bring out the best qualities of their character. It is a serious program for serious, public-spirited students with a passion for civic leadership.

Master of American History and Government
The Master of American History and Government  degree program at Ashland University, established in 2005, is the only one of its kind in the nation, designed specifically for middle and high school teachers of history, civics and government. Teachers from every state have taken courses in this program.

Congressional Academy for American
History and Civics
The Congressional Academy for American History and Civics will lead current high school juniors in a careful study of the pivotal turning points in American history memorialized by the Declaration of Independence, the Gettysburg Address, and the "I Have a Dream" speech. Participating students will spend two weeks in Washington, DC, with day trips to Philadelphia and Gettysburg. Two students will be accepted from each state. MORE
Presidential Academy for American
History and Civics
The Presidential Academy for American History and Civics  leads secondary school teachers in a careful study of the pivotal turning points in American history memorialized by the Declaration of Independence, the Gettysburg Address, and the “I Have a Dream” speech. Each year, 50 teachers–one from each state–spend five days in Philadelphia, six days in Gettysburg and six days in Washington, D.C.

The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial
 February 12, 2009 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. We present here a collection of resources on Lincoln. Included are many of his most notable speeches and letters, commentary and lectures by leading historians and political scientists, original lesson plans developed by history professors and master classroom teachers, and links to addition web resources.

President Bush Speaks at Ashbrook Center's Conference on the Presidency and the Courts
The Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs at Ashland University co-sponsored a conference that  featured President George W. Bush as the honored guest. "We are thrilled that President Bush attended this conference and served as the featured speaker for the event," said Peter Schramm, executive director of the Ashbrook Center.  NoLeftTurns.ashbrook.org – Named after John Ashbrook’s slogan in his 1972 Presidential Primary bid against Richard Nixon, No Left Turns is the Ashbrook Center’s blog. The site features daily commentary by Dr. Peter Schramm and Ashbrook Adjunct Fellows.
TeachingAmericanHistory.org – The Center’s web site for teachers, TeachingAmericanHistory.org, features an extensive library of over 1,500 original historical documents for use by teachers and students. The site also features an extensive audio archive of the Center’s seminars and summer institutes for teachers.
 PresidentialAcademy.org – The Center’s web site for the program that takes teachers to Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Washington, D.C. This site features information about the program, the text of the original historical documents studied by the teachers and an audio archive of the entire first year of the Academy.
mahg.ashland.edu – The Master of American History and Government program attracts teachers from across the country, and this web site offers an explanation of the program and its curriculum, information about upcoming courses, and the ability to apply and register for courses online.
 Podcasts – The Ashbrook Center offers three Podcasts, which allow visitors to subscribe to audio broadcasts that can be downloaded to your computer or portable MP3 player. Every week, Dr. Peter Schramm uses his “You Americans” Podcast to talk with interesting and thoughtful people about American politics and other topics. There is also a Podcast for events at the Center and one for the Center’s seminars for teachers.
