Larry P. Arnn is president of The Claremont Institute for the Study of Statesmanship and Political Philosophy.
The Institute is a public policy research institution based in Southern California.
Its mission is to restore the principles of the American founding to their rightful, preeminent authority in our national life.
Arnn received his B.A. in political science and accounting in 1974 from Arkansas State University, graduating with highest distinction.
He studied at The Claremont Graduate School and received his M.A. in government in 1976 and his Ph.D. in government in 1985.
His doctoral thesis is titled Winston Churchill as Minister of Munitions. He studied in England from 1977 to 1980, first as a research student in international history at the London School of Economics and then in modern history at Worcester College, Oxford University.
He has received numerous fellowships and awards, among them a two-year fellowship from the Alcoa Foundation in 1972; a Richard M. Weaver Fellowship in 1975; a Rotary International Fellowship in 1977; and Earhart Foundation Fellowship in 1978, 1979 and 1980; and Winston S. Churchill Association Fellowship from 1977 to 1980.
While in England, Arnn served as director of research for Sir Martin Gilbert of Merton College, Oxford.
Sir Martin is the official biographer of Sir Winston Churchill.
Arnn returned to the United States in 1980 to become an editor for Public Research Syndicated. In 1985, he became president of The Claremont Institute.
His essay, War and Peace in Winston Churchill, was included in Natural Right and Political Right, edited by Dr. Peter Schramm, professor political science and deputy director for academic affairs of the John M. Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs at Ashland University,
and Thomas Silver (Caroline Academic Press, 1985). His essay, Principles and Phrases: Rhetoric in the Statesmanship of Winston S. Churchill, was published in Rhetoric and American Statesmanship, edited by Glen Thurow and Jeffrey Wallin (Caroline Academic Press, 1984). Arnn has published articles in a number of national magazines and periodicals on issues of public policy and political theory.
In March 1990, Arnn was appointed by HUD Secretary Jack Kemp to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Advisory Commission on Regulatory Barriers to Affordable Housing.
He is a director of the North Center Life Insurance Company, of the Henry Salvatori Center of Claremont McKenna College, of the Philadelphia Society and of St. Mark’s Episcopal Schoo.
He is a member of the American Political Science Association, of Pi Sigma Alpha, of the Mont Pelerin Society, of the International Churchill Society and of the Philanthropy Roundtable.
He was founding chair of the California Civil Rights Initiative, or Proposition 209, on the November 1996 ballot.
Arnn is married to the former Penelope Houghton of Preston, England, and has three children, Henry, Katy, and Alice. He lives in Claremont, California.
